![]() ![]() I would also like to take the opportunity to say that service is our number one objective and this is what our guests appreciate the most. Please accept my sincere apologies for all the inconveniences my staff caused you during your stay. We are sorry that your experience at La Gavina was not as you expected. My impression was cemented when I spent the following three nights further up the coast in a 4* hotel in a more spectacular location, in a room with a prime sea view, for half the price, but received twice the service (and twice as good a breakfast!) Breakfast was underwhelming - again, not bad, but of a range and quality not commensurate with the price point. The staff are clearly underpaid - the head wait was wearing broken spectacles with one of the arms missing - suggesting that a larger share of the revenue is going to the corporate owners' dividends rather than being spent on top quality staff capable of delivering top-notch service and properly incentivised to do so. In fact seeing how rude some guests were to staff, perhaps they even prefer weak service. I think the problem is that the hotel now goes after a certain client base that simply wants to spend a lot of money, and doesn't really care about service. In a country famous for vermouth, I had to argue with barstaff two nights in a row to get them to acknowledge that they had one that wasn't big standard martini (weirdly no Spanish vermouth, but they had Punt e Mes both on the menu and clearly visible behind the bar). The stunning bar is staffed with people who don't know what they're doing. Or when at the almost empty poolside restaurant I asked to move to one of the tables in the sunshine, I was told no because they weren't laid (all they needed was pick up a placemat, glass, and cutlery!) My dinner order was forgotten one night. It was cold and aloof, and even the smallest request felt like a hassle - like having to go to the front desk at 215pm to ask for a waiter to take my lunch order. In this price bracket the service should be exemplary you should be made to feel that no reasonable request is too much trouble. Being part of The Leading Hotels of the World group, this is a very expensive hotel. Some of the food is excellent, but some is poor. The bedroom was enormous, as was the swimming pool, and the grounds are well kept. The hotel interior was stunning - beautiful antiques even in the corridors, and salons, bars, lounges galore. Word of warning eating and drinking in this hotel is not for the feint hearted, prices outstrip the great majority of five star hotels throughout the world. Pool area lovely and again well maintained. Apart from the main frontage, which appears a bit shabby the remainder of the grounds are exquisitely maintained and a credit to the grounds staff. The cleaners are very kind and helpful but they are understaffed and need to cut corners. So we had to navigate our own way around the premises.Whilst there are staff at breakfast you need to make your own coffee, look for sugar, cutlery etc The bedrooms are a good size and lovely decor but the beds are a bit of a let down.mattresses are lumpy and extremely old style. Reception barely acknowledged our arrival, on showing us around we were told the pool was over there, breakfast served down that corridor. From the moment we arrived it was apparent that this hotel lacked service and welcome. But how unfortunate that such a jewel could be let down by such mediocre service. For those wanting to explore the local area, the nearby coastal path is highly recommended.Wonderful legacy building sitting on spectacular location. With both an outdoor seawater pool and an indoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna there is ample opportunity to relax. For when you want to sip a crisp glass of wine, head to the terrace and enjoy the views across the sparkling blue water. Guests can choose to dine by the poolside or at the romantic Candlelight Restaurant, surrounded by fragrant gardens. Seafood is brought in on local fishing boats and can be enjoyed at the hotel’s two restaurants. For those wanting a little more privacy, the villa has two bedrooms, a kitchen, living room and a private yard. 74 rooms and suites are impeccably styled with fine silk upholstery, Venetian glass lamps, marble bathrooms and antique furniture. The pretty Sant Pol beach lies just in front of the hotel so you can enjoy the turquoise waters and rocky coastline that have made this part of Spain famous. Located in the heart of the Costa Brava perched on a small peninsular in between two secluded bays, is Hostal de la Gavina. ![]()
